Shana VS Shinoa (Shakugan no Shana VS Seraph of the End)

Shana, the Flaming-Haired, Blazing-Eyed Flame Haze from Shakugan no Shana.

Shinoa Hiragi, the Imperial Demon Army’s cursed inheritor of The First Progenitor from Seraph of the End.

Raised from birth to be living weapons, these girls never had a chance at a normal childhood. Sacrificing normalcy, they became empowered by unfathomably powerful beings indwelt within them, giving them the power to protect humanity from supernatural man-eating monsters. Yet, even they were shocked to find the greatest power of all came not from demons or cursed weapons… but love. A love so fierce, so earnest, that they’d even turn their blades against the boys that captured their hearts in order to save them from themselves. Plot twist!

Will the Hiragi family’s premier prodigy snuff out Shana’s fire for good, or will the ferocious flaming fighter herald the end of Shinoa’s life? You absolutely didn’t ask for it, but let’s see who wins… a DEATH BATTLE!

Before We Start…

Media

Shakugan no Shana is a deceptively expansive franchise. There are two separate manga adaptations that cover different volumes of the original novels, and multiple anime adaptations split between series and film, mixing anime-original filler with faithful novel material. Due to the inaccessible nature of Shana volumes 10-22, we are forced to focus on what is available. Therefore, Shana will be composited between the available light novels, both manga adaptations, anime series adaptation and film adaptation.

As for Seraph of the End, our primary source is the original manga, as well as the accompanying light novels, which were written by the mangaka simultaneously and intertwine with the main narrative intimately. In addition to the manga and novels, we’ll also look at some official data books and the standard incomplete anime adaptations. As Seraph is, somehow, still being actively published, our research cutoff for the manga was Chapter 154.

Before we kick things off, we should also note that there are miscellaneous games for both franchises involved, but they also run into the problem of little-to-no translation projects available for viewing, and are unlikely to be particularly substantial given the nature of their gameplay regardless. As such, we’ve opted to focus on just their core material and respective adaptations here.

Terminology

Don’t worry, we know you probably don’t know a single thing about either series in question here. If these were simpler franchises, it’d be more reasonable to simply proceed normally, but these have quite a lot of proper nouns and terms thrown around frequently that may be unapproachable to many. So, here’s a very quick, bare essentials, simplified rundown on what specific words mean what, if you ever feel the need to refer back to this section throughout the blog.

Shakugan no Shana

Flame Haze: Basically superhumans who hunt the bad guys, and are given power via contracts with powerful beings.

Crimson Denizen: Denizens are inhuman beings from another world that can enter the human world, and have to consume human life force to survive. Can look human or monstrous visually.

Crimson Lords / Gods: Basically just Denizens but way stronger, and instead of consuming humans, they give their powers to Flame Hazes to hunt Denizens. For balance and stuff. Gods are basically just a step even further beyond Lords, a title reserved for very very few entities.

Crimson World: A parallel world to the human world where all the Denizens come from.

Mystes: A person who has a Treasure Tool inside them.

Treasure Tool: An object that has special powers.

Rinne: Simple monsters created by Flame Hazes or Denizens, subservient cannon fodder.

Power of Existence: Very important term that will be expanded upon later, but basically think of it like a life force energy system… but “existence” is very literal, and intrinsically tied to causality.

Seraph of the End

Progenitors: Progenitors are basically just sequential descendants of the First Vampire, Sika Madu. So the First Progenitor is Sika Madu, the Second Progenitor is the vamp made by the First Progenitor, Third Progenitor refers to the batch of vamps made by the Second, so on and so forth.

Cursed Gear: Special weapons that have a demon trapped inside, that gives power via contracts to human wielders.

Demons: Vampires become demons when they die. Usually end up sealed in Cursed Gear but can exist outside them on rare occasions.

Horsemen: Basic monster goons in Seraph of the End.

Seraph of the End: Artificial angels, basically, made using ancient artifacts with a lot of power.

A heartbeat that lasts for eternity lives consumed in soundless balls of fire. No one can tell when the world is displaced… and the flames of the Crimson World sweep over all.

For as long as mankind has existed, it has believed itself to be the apex predator of the world. Such is the folly of man, to believe there is but a single world. In truth, the earth is but one side mirroring a parallel dimension known as the Crimson World. Its inhabitants, the Denizens, cross the border between realms freely, seeking to feast upon the Power of Existence found in… you guessed it, humans. By consuming countless victim’s literal existences and erasing them from chronology altogether, these Denizens threaten the stability and balance of reality in the human realm. Left unchecked, the world would surely collapse under the growing torrent of displaced causality; a silent, undetectable, unavoidable catastrophe.

Luckily for us, not all residents of the Crimson World fancy feasting on human life force. The greater Crimson Lords of the Crimson World offered themselves into contracts with certain special individual humans, bestowing their considerable might upon their chosen warrior in exchange for lifelong servitude. These are Flame Hazes, who dedicate their lives to slaying rogue Denizens that threaten the balance between worlds. Among all Crimson Lords and their Flame Hazes that have upheld stability throughout history, however, none are as legendary as the Flame of Heavens, Alastor and his Flaming-haired, Blazing-eyed hunter.

The girl wanted to be a Flame Haze. Her life’s trajectory was chosen for her the instant Alastor’s attendant Wilhelmina found an orphaned infant, taking her in to raise as their own. From day one, Alastor and Wilhelmina trained the young, nameless girl into a potent fighter capable of entering a contract with the Flame of Heavens himself. Despite their well-meaning intentions, Alastor and Wilhelmina… Well, frankly, sucked at parenting. Yet, the girl didn’t seem to mind. She trained dutifully, hoping to live up to the expectations and dreams of the only people she could look up to. In their distant hesitance, even the hardened Crimson Lord and Flame Haze struggled to hide their affection for the young girl.

The girl would be forced to lock in sooner than anyone expected, however, when several Denizens invaded Alastor’s hidden palace, seeking to cull his trainee before she could ascend to greater power. The girl was forced to enter a contract with Alastor to receive his power, yet she could not yet say what it was she truly desired. In lieu of proper understanding and consideration for what being a Flame Haze constituted, she agreed to the contract with the intent to find out for herself if that was what she truly wanted. Thus, the girl succeeded in activating her lifelong contract with Alastor, bathing in his flames to become his Flame Haze. From that day onward, Alastor and his Flame Haze wandered across Japan, culling invading Denizens dutifully day-in and day-out.

Their journeys brought them to the unassuming Misaki City, an average, unremarkable Japanese metropolis. The girl continued performing her duties, saving the lives of unsuspecting humans from their silent life-eating prey. It should have been just another bump on the road, yet in slaying a Denizen’s goon that day, the girl met a strange boy whose Power of Existence did not fade when consumed. This lost child of sorts, one Yuji Sakai, proved to be enough of an anomaly in nature that Alastor assigned his Flame Haze to monitor him for safety.

The girl reluctantly agreed, allowing Mr. Anime Protagonist to hitch along with her as she set up shop in Misaki City, slaying Denizens like a 9-to-5 job. Turns out, Yuji wasn’t just a human: he was a Mystes, basically a living being imbued with a particular Treasure with great power. As the two spent more time together, the girl found herself struggling to grapple with the alien emotions dwelling within her. Why did she get so angry when Yuji spent time with other girls? Why did she let him introduce her to his mother, and why were they so kind to her? Most of all, why did he insist on giving her a name - something she had never had any use for before - so shortly after meeting her? All these questions and more, Shana would now ponder endlessly.

Their time in Misaki City was anything but mundane, yet it was the crushing, unfamiliar simplicity of domestic life that began to truly change Shana day by day. Slowly but surely, Shana found herself surrounded by friends at school with Yuji. As they continued to change Misaki City for the better, they found new allies in former enemies like the spell-casting day-drinking Margery Daw, and even reunited with Wilhelmina. For the first time in Shana’s life, she had something resembling stability, something resembling… family.

Of course, it wouldn’t be long before those days would come to an all too abrupt end. On Christmas, Shana had finally resolved to settle her feelings with Yuji, ready to confess her true love she had developed for him amidst their shared days. And yet… Yuji never appeared. Yuji, in fact, had chosen to vanish from Misaki City, confronting his complacency head-on in pursuit of greater power to protect those he cared for. In doing so, he aligned himself with the Denizen organization that he & Shana had fought against so many times prior: Ball Masque. Even worse, Yuji allowed himself to become the vessel for a Crimson God, the deity parallel to Alastor: the Snake of the Festival.

Snake of the Festival’s ambitions were deific in scale. His goal was to create a copy of the human world in the rift between it and the Crimson World; a utopia where Denizens could live in peace, no longer shackled by their need to consume Power of Existence. Shana, however, sought to ensure the new world’s laws fundamentally outlawed the consumption of humans; an oversight in the Snake of the Festival’s orders she and the Flame Hazes around the world could not abide by. Thus, the Final Battle of Misaki City waged between the Flame Hazes and Denizens, both sides laying countless sacrifices on the road to the promised land.

As Flame Hazes and Denizens migrated en masse to their new home, Shana faced down Yuji one more time. In the face of his noble, if stubborn ideals, Shana could not understand Yuji’s desire to shoulder the consequences of his actions alone. He brought about an unthinkable harmony between beings - with her added compromises - yet resolved to wander alone in atonement for the lives taken under his command on the path there. The only thing left to do was knock sense into the boy she loved, professing her desire to shoulder his pain with him in equal measure. Finally, the two reconciled their unspoken feelings, shedding their inhibitions in the name of love.

Even in the new world of Xanadu, Yuji and Shana continue to maintain peace between humans and Denizens. It may have taken the girl time to realize it, but a life spent protecting those she loves was what she wanted from the very beginning. So, to any Denizens seeking to disrupt the laws of Xanadu, beware; for should you tamper with the balance of the world, the Flaming-haired, Blazing-eyed Hunter of the Flame of Heavens will be there to burn your delusions to the ground.

Welcome to the end of the world. After a mysterious catastrophe wiped out the majority of humankind, sects of survivors around the globe formed resistance militias to combat the planet’s new apex predator: Vampires. Among all of the resistance forces in the world, however, none could compare to the significance or power of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, run by the illustrious Hiragi family.

Unfortunately, the Hiragi’s… well, they’ve got some issues, to put it lightly. Even before the world ended, they were the spearhead behind one of Japan’s most powerful and influential cults, the leading force in taboo research and spellcraft development. The Hiragi’s went so far as to genetically curate and breed batches of children, subjecting them to brutal torture and experimentation to harness their potential. For what? Why, to contain and suppress literal demons, of course. Among all the children created through this process, only two could be called living successes: Mahiru, and the clever, shit-eating-grin-wearing gremlin: Shinoa.

Mahiru was a bonafide genius, who excelled at every task thrown at her. It was her ingenuity that fast-tracked the development of Cursed Gear, weapons that contain within them sealed and suppressed demons, giving their human wielders a fighting chance against vampire-kind. Shinoa, by comparison, seemed… irrelevant. Even at a mere four years old, Shinoa internalized a belief that her life meant nothing, that she was simply a lab rat living in the shadow of her big sister. Even worse, in Shinoa’s eyes, that meant she could do nothing to distract the scientists from prodding and experimenting on Mahiru further, whose generational talent almost ‘shielded’ Shinoa from further harm and attention.

Naturally, being raised in a lab for the purpose of containing a demon inside you tends to mess with your head a bit. While her intent was to ‘protect’ Shinoa, Mahiru resorted to brutally beating her four-year old sister every single day, with the idea that it would force her to suppress any and all true emotions. Demons, the kind implanted inside the Hiragi sisters, feed off negative energy. Human vices like greed and lust give demons power, and if the human in question isn’t careful in their supplying of these emotions, the demon can completely, permanently possess their host. In Mahiru’s head, being cruel and distant was the only way to ensure Shinoa would not allow herself to become overcome by those vices.

After Mahiru’s apparent death and also the destruction of almost all human life on earth, Shinoa decided to distance herself from the Hiragi bloodline. She wouldn’t be able to escape their reach, however, as that ill-timed cataclysm from earlier decided to kick in. Now, mankind were nothing but cattle, left to the mercy of their inhuman overlords who enslaved and fed on them for sustenance. Or at least, that would be the case if not for the Hiragi clan’s Japanese Imperial Demon Army’s efforts to slay all vampires and liberate the surviving pockets of humanity. Even so, Shinoa renounced her right to climb the ranks of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, hiding from the pressure and attention her biological half-brothers at the top faced. As a lowly lieutenant in service of Lt. Colonel Guren Ichinose - her dead sister’s betrothed - Shinoa became a bonafide vampire slayer, equipped with the Cursed Gear she nicknamed “Shi”.

Everything would change, however, when a certain loud, stubborn, family-obsessed dumbass protagonist showed up disobeying orders in the field of battle. Shinoa was assigned to monitor a certain loud-mouthed troublemaker, Yuichiro Hyakuya. All he wanted was plain and simple revenge on all vampirekind for killing his family, and now his lack of discipline and bull-headed recklessness was Shinoa’s problem to keep in check. In accordance with Guren’s orders, Shinoa helped Yuichiro make actual human connections with others, finding likeminded friends at their school. It wouldn’t be long before they, too, enlisted in the Imperial Demon Army, forming what would be known as the Shinoa Squad, led by… take a guess.

For a time, Shinoa, Yuichiro, and their newfound family did battle against the vampires that ruled much of the world. It wouldn’t take long before things spiraled out of control; one shocking revelation after another. Yuichiro seemed to be some kind of hybrid angel-demon monster, and his presumed-dead best friend Mika reappeared as a vampire. Even worse, the Imperial Demon Army turned out to be just as untrustworthy as the very vampires they fought against; not so much a surprise for Shinoa, whose life had been manipulated and crafted by the Hiragi’s all along. Even so, the Shinoa Squad defected upon seeing the head of the Hiragi family sacrifice countless of his own men in battle in the hopes of creating a titular Seraph of the End™.

This is where the story gets… well, frankly, insanely convoluted. We’d be here all day explaining the constant surge of new, crucial characters, plot twists, flipped allegiances, secret backstories, and more. As it pertains to Shinoa, she found herself getting left behind as Yuichiro grew more and more powerful, determined to save literally everyone in the world. In other words, she succumbed to the classic fate of all female leads in shonen manga. Though she didn’t realize it at first, she was beginning to fall in love with Yuichiro; the first person in her entire life who treated her as an equal, a person first and foremost. No preconceived expectations, no ulterior motives. Even Guren, who had treated her kindly as a child, only had a convenient, mutually beneficial connection to her through her sister.

This love, as Mahiru predicted so long ago, fed into Shinoa’s inner demon. The Cursed Gear she wielded, “Shi”, was in truth, Sika Madu, the ancient First Progenitor of all vampires. As it turns out, Sika Madu was actually the one behind… basically everything. He hand-crafted the Hiragi bloodline to do his bidding;  generations upon generations of Hiragi’s secretly trying to create a perfect genetic vessel for him to inhabit. He created all vampirekind in an attempt to resurrect the fallen angels struck down by God’s fury, punishment for Sika Madu’s unforgivable sins in defiance of God before humanity even existed. And indeed, he was the voice that spoke to Shinoa in her dreams since her childhood, patiently biding his time. At long last, Sika Madu manifested, attempting to possess his perfect vessel in Shinoa.

Beneath Shinoa’s sarcastic, flippant attitude and quick-witted remarks hid a terribly abused and repressed child, whose emotional barriers kept the demon at bay for a time… but ultimately, he succeeded in controlling her body, transforming her into a demon herself. However, Mahiru’s plan was twofold. By stunting Shinoa’s emotional development, she ensured that when her little sister finally fell in love, that unrestricted love would shatter her emotional barriers, becoming wild and ravenous. With her mind set on helping Yu, Shinoa awoke from Sika Madu’s possession and literally consumed his very being, taking nearly all of his ancient power for herself.

Just in time, as Yu was busy wrestling with a newfound savior complex that turned him against the very found-family he swore to protect, including Shinoa. In his mind, both the Imperial Demon Army and the vamps were going about their goals wrong, compromising too much in the name of a mythical greater good. Yuichiro strove to revive both the fallen vampires and humans in the world, to create a future where everyone could live in harmony; consequences be damned, even if the cost of such an act would require his own life in the process. Shinoa could not agree to these terms, opposing and sabotaging Sika Madu’s bestowal of power upon Yu to become an equal force capable of standing in his way.

Humanity will always struggle and resist the inevitability of the end, yet Shinoa now fights for a different purpose. Taking Mahiru’s death to heart, she’s realized the beauty of a life that ends, accepted her lot in life, and resolved to live in the present with those she has left while they’re still alive. While others may cling to the past, unable to move on from loss and grief, she will stop at nothing to protect the family she’s found… even if that puts her at odds with the very same people she now lives for.

Alastor

Little is known about the exact origins of the Flame of Heaven, God of Retribution Alastor. What we do know is that he is one of three Crimson Gods of the Crimson World, making him one of the most revered and feared entities across all three planes of existence. In the First Great War of the 16th century, it was Alastor’s very first Flame Haze, Mathilde Saint-Omer, who fought against the Denizens of the Crimson World in a battle for all life on earth. With her sacrifice, the vengeful Crimson Lord Asiz was defeated, ensuring humanity’s safety for centuries to come.

Yet, in Mathilde’s final moments, she said something that struck the Flame of Heaven in a way no other ever had. She professed her love for Alastor, a testament to all the time they’d spent together, the bond they’d forged through countless battles. Mathilde’s wish was for her friend Wilhelmina, rival (and secret unrequited lover) Merihim, and Alastor, to find and raise a  successor to her position, and to show them the same love she had come to know from them. Thus, Alastor, Wilhelmina and Merihim spent centuries training potential contractors, recipients of Alastor’s divine might, to see who could fill Mathilde’s shoes.

It wouldn’t be until Wilhelmina came across a nameless orphan girl with the potential and capacity to change the world that Alastor would find who he was looking for. This girl, like Mathilde before her, possessed the wisdom to not drown in knowledge, the martial adeptness to excel in combat, and the drive to train every day to become a Flame Haze. Though Alastor didn’t realize it at first, he and Wilhelmina were once more captivated by the alien emotion that Mathilde struck in them: love, in their own dysfunctional found-family sort of way.

Alastor’s plan for the girl would go off swimmingly, as she grew into her new role and new name in time. Together, Shana and Alastor make a perfect dynamic duo that truly care for each other and compliment each other in combat seamlessly.

For this analysis, we’ll be including Alastor as part of Shana’s kit, given he is always by her side via her pendant, and the powers he bestows upon her cannot be restricted under ordinary conditions.

Sika Madu

Long before the dawn of mankind, a seraphim named Sika Madu led his exiled kin in building the Tower of Babel to return to Paradise. This perpetual, unending labor, as well as the unexplainable deaths of his followers, shattered Sika Madu’s faith in God. Driven by grief after the loss of his child Mika, Sika Madu discovered how to invert “Light” into “Darkness”, attempting to cloak the earth from God’s view, hiding his attempt at resurrecting Mika’s life. This defiance of God, this unholy taboo, triggered His divine judgement; the Archangels slaughtered the remaining seraphim on earth and condemned Sika Madu - now cursed with the burden of immortality - to burn alone in the sun for eternity.

Thousands of years later, Sika Madu managed to harness the Darkness to circumvent his divine punishment. He resumed exactly where he left off, using the lingering souls of fallen angels to create humanity… yet even still, he could not revive Mika. Throughout history, he has operated from the shadows as a puppet master, engineering the vampire race and the sorcerous Hiragi clan to spark perpetual conflict in hopes of spurring a resistance force desperate enough to biologically engineer a suitable envoy for him to inhabit.

This plan culminated in the birth of Shinoa, an unassuming and severely low-self esteemed girl of the Hiragi bloodline. From a young age, Sika Madu spoke to her in her dreams, sowing the seeds for when he would guide her to succumb to her vices and let him take complete control of her body.

Their relationship was transactional and hesitant from the start. Sika Madu, for his part, never truly cared for Shinoa, only viewing her as a stepping stone towards his true goal of reviving Mika. Shinoa, from the very beginning, never trusted her innate demon, and the walls around her heart always forced Sika Madu into a dormant, submissive heel. That all changed when Sika Madu’s plan began to unravel, forcing him to take desperate measures. He forcefully possessed Shinoa’s body, only relinquishing control when forcibly sealed by the combined efforts of his own vampire offspring and the Hiragi’s deviant mastermind, Mahiru.

For this analysis, we will be considering Sika Madu as part of Shinoa’s kit to start, with the understanding that she can consume his presence within her soul should the occasion call for it, as that is what happened in the manga.

Experience & Skill

Shana

Owing to her upbringing under Alastor and Wilhelmina’s care, Shana is an incredibly skilled martial artist. At 11-12 years old, she was already adept in CQC, used to constant on-the-fly adaptation and strategic forethinking. Her day-to-day routine across an entire decade involved fighting Shiro, formerly Merihim, in the morning, evening and afternoon; an opponent that forced her to hone her skill and survivability constantly. She’s a master of the rapier and quick-draw, good enough to keep pace with other Denizens and Flame Hazes who are centuries old or more, including war veterans like Sophie and Wilhelmina.

Shana is always on guard, never letting her mind slacken, and can ‘switch’ her mind to a heightened state of awareness where every nerve in her body can detect enemy movements. This makes her an excellent analyst of others’ abilities as well, able to precisely sense strong opponents and assess their threat level quickly. She can even sense power levels and track their flow of energy, gauging how strong or weak they become over the course of battle.

When Shana earned her blade from Tenmoku Ikko, she demonstrated considerable skill when she predicted the Mystes’ movements in battle while he completely cloaked his ‘killing intent’ from her. ‘Killing intent’ would go on to become one of Shana’s defining attributes in battle, as she can cloak her own and read the intent of others to get a grip on their attacks and adapt accordingly. In her own words, it’s basically like playing Rock, Paper, Scissors while knowing what the opponent will choose the whole time, strongly resembling a degree of predictive precognition. This same reading of killing intent is how Shana learned to wield the sword she carries, as she aligns her use of it with her own sense of ‘death’ to guide her strikes. And if all that fails, she’ll do anything to circumvent an opponent’s advantage in combat, falling back on improvisation and trickery should martial skill and tactics fail her.

Shinoa

Shinoa, despite her young age, is notably pragmatic and analytical, thanks to growing up in a post-apocalyptic hellhole where just about every terrible thing that could happen, did happen. As a child, Shinoa trained in magic, athletics, and swordsmanship. It can be inferred that Shinoa has committed “copious study and training” with her Cursed Gear, given she was assigned a leader to Yuichiro and their squadmates early into their endeavors as Imperial Demon Army soldiers. However, perhaps Shinoa’s greatest talent comes in her ability to learn new things astonishingly fast, like when she replicated Sika Madu’s soul-based abilities after seeing him do it once. After consuming his powers, she began to teach herself how to use his magic spells just as quickly. She also figured out new abilities of her own entirely after simply putting her mind to it. This skill is naturally attributed to her, much like her sister Mahiru, who is considered a once-in-a-century genius.

In order to survive at all in the vampire-run world, Shinoa would need to intellectually compete with vampires like Ferid Bathory and Crowley, who have lived in excess of 800 years, or Saito, who has lived more than 2,000 years. Many of those vampires, like the aforementioned Crowley, were seasoned combat veterans in their past lives. She even outsmarted Sika Madu, whose existence and experiences predate humanity entirely, dating back more than tens of thousands of years.

In combat, Shinoa’s full potential has rarely been displayed, but evidence suggests she prefers to hold back against foes, should the situation not be immediately life-threatening. A mix of pragmatism and strategy, Shinoa’s willingness to feign inferiority has allowed her to gain the upper hand on powerful foes like Ky Luc, defeating him with a surprise attack before he ever had a chance to struggle. She scared Sika Madu with the depths of power she’d kept hidden, only playing her full hand when the right opportunity came and she could gain the upper hand over him.

Powers & Arsenal

Shana

Cocytus

Cocytus is the Divine Vessel in which Alastor’s soul resides, channeling his existence in a minor quantity to communicate with his Flame Haze. Shana specifically chose this form for Alastor so that he could view the world alongside her, in contrast to other Flame Hazes indwelling their Crimson Lord companions in grimoires or other such weapons.

All that aside, Alastor’s primary function in combat is that he’s essentially a second pair of eyes for Shana at all times. When she’s off her game, he can give her advice, recognize her shortcomings, critique her weak points, and guide her actions accordingly through telepathic communication. This is possible through the merging of Alastor and Shana’s consciousnesses, making them a perfect dynamic duo in battle. And don’t even think about separating the pendant from Shana; Alastor can teleport across space to return to her side, and she can telekinetically summon Cocytus back like Mjolnir regardless.

It is important to clarify that Cocytus contains only a minor aspect of Alastor’s divine presence. In Shakugan no Shana, it’s stated repeatedly that Alastor manifesting in the world fully would essentially fuck everything up, so to circumvent this, Alastor’s essence in Cocytus is “in a state of dormancy” just big enough to fit into the object containing him. That said, Cocytus can be broken by sufficiently powerful weapons or foes, and doing so would force Alastor to completely manifest in the human world.

Lastly, we should note that Shana’s powers are derived from Alastor, but she does not need to have Cocytus in her possession to access her abilities. What actually matters is the contract between Flame Haze and Crimson Lord; if either one begins to reject the agreed upon terms, even if in a mental state of distress, they will lose access to their powers.

Nietono no Shana

The Nietono no Shana is Shana’s weapon of choice in combat. Fun fact, she’s named after the sword, not the other way around! Anywho, this oversized odachi may look simple, but there is more than meets the eye here. In truth, the Nietono no Shana was forged as a weapon to be wielded only by the strongest warrior possible. Its bladesmith, Tenmoku Ikko, was so devoted to this cause, he sealed his soul inside the blade, imbuing it with all of his considerable might to further boost the wielder’s strength.

That alone makes the blade tougher than ordinary, let alone when augmented in the hands of someone like a Flame Haze. Hell, it’s likely even tougher than Shana herself, as it was stated it would survive the intense light-based heat of the Rainbow Flame Sword even if she didn’t. No wonder Shana regularly uses the blade as a barrier against powerful energy blasts.

Besides containing an incredibly powerful spirit and being super tough, the Nietono no Shana possesses an innate affinity for pyrokinetic abilities, which pairs pretty well with Shana’s… everything. She can ignite the blade at-will, launching giant flaming projectiles from it for ranged attack.

If Shana is ever disarmed from the Nietono no Shana for long enough, Tenmoku Ikko can manifest from the sword, responding to her call to return to his master’s side, cutting down anyone stopping him from reuniting with her. We’ll get more into this power system in a bit, but Tenmoku Ikko can also freely manipulate and absorb the Power of Existence found in living beings, further adding to his considerable strength.

Night Cape

The Night Cape, or Yogasa, is more than a stylish coat for aura farming. It’s Shana’s primary defensive tool, perfect for shielding from devastating ranged attacks. As a manifestation of Alastor’s power - his wing, to be precise - Shana can materialize it out of thin air, or de-materialize it just as easily. Once worn, it will not leave her body unless she chooses to remove it, and it moves at her will like an extra appendage. Thus, she can change its shape at-will to suit her needs, though she does prefer its original form.

It was tough enough to block Tenmoku Ikko’s sword strikes, the same kind that cleaved through Wilhelmina’s barriers like tissue paper. Fire attacks used by other Flame Hazes that burn away Power of Existence? No problem for the Night Cape. Even ordinary contact with it is risky, as Shana can channel her flames through the cloak to burn stuff on impact.

Perhaps most fascinating among the Night Cape’s abilities, however, is the fact that it acts as a gutterspace through which she can store an incredibly large density of objects. Her sword, for instance, is stored within the Night Cape, and she can tuck away anything she gets her hands on just as simply. The cloak can act like a vortex, sucking in an entire room’s worth of miscellaneous doodads and random items.

Chorde

Working in-tandem with the Night Cape’s gutterspace ability, Shana stores countless of these rings in her cloak. When summoned, she can imbue them with Power of Existence to either launch them by hand or shoot them from her cloak in a multi-shot AOE shotgun blast from afar.

Power of Existence

Power of Existence is the primary power system in Shakugan no Shana; a universal energy that constitutes the body, will, and literal existence and causality of living beings. This energy is somewhat synonymous with the soul, but do note that we are being very literal when we say Power of Existence is explicitly correlative to, well, one’s existence, and everything that implies. Those whose Power of Existence are fully consumed straight up stop existing, and are made to have never existed in the first place.

Shana uses this energy for essentially every ability she has. While she can draw upon her own internal well of Power of Existence, she can also draw from the environment and surrounding area to amp herself without the very real risk of running out of energy. The more Power of Existence around her to draw upon, the greater amount of energy she can expend, and for longer periods of time.

Moreover, she can freely manipulate Power of Existence belonging to others; either burning it away with her flames, or handling it directly in her hands, to either absorb (and subsequently assume the identity of the person whose existence she consumes) or dismantle. Once in possession of someone’s accumulated Power of Existence, or Torch, she can view their memories and re-trace the exact actions they’ve taken, as well as those of the people around them. Pretty useful for day-to-day Flame Haze duties, but when things get heated, she can also convert Power of Existence-based attacks into energy to use for herself, turning a disadvantage into an advantage.

She can even accumulate quantities of Power of Existence, charging it into an explosive burst of energy out of her limbs to propel herself like a speeding bullet for mobility in combat, or channel it through her sword to turn stabby cuts into explodey ones. And, just for good measure, she can block off the energy she herself emits for evasive purposes, should the situation call for it.

Interestingly, it’s been stated that Denizens who are dominated by emotional vices like lust ‘blend in’ with the Power of Existence contained in ordinary humans, suggesting they’re far weaker than other Denizens. This would imply that there is an emotional-based component to the density and potency of Power of Existence, though it appears to be inconsistent how this is applied; as Shana’s powers are strengthened by love, contrary to the above example.

Flame Haze Physiology

Flame Hazes are metahumans, unbound by things like age and ordinary physical limitations. Their abnormally high strength, agility and dexterity can be attributed to their statuses as contracted vessels for Crimson Lords and ability to access Power of Existence to strengthen said attributes; when Shana was depowered from accessing her Flame Haze abilities, she was notably far weaker and slower, proving this to be the case. Also, perhaps most interestingly, Flame Hazes can persist for centuries as sentient existences even after their bodies fade away, remaining as spectral Torch-based beings.

Pyrokinesis

Shana’s signature ability and the main form her Power of Existence manifests in combat is through pyrokinesis. While it may seem pretty straightforward, basic ‘shooting flames from her sword’ type stuff, Shana’s usage of fire is more clever and varied than it appears on the surface. She can summon flames around her body in a burst, launch waves of flame like a whip, create expanding twisters of flame, launch a volley of fireballs from her palms, or emit a massive sustained flamethrower from her sword. By coming into contact with an object, she can ignite it, turning mundane objects like a volleyball into an explosive projectile, or superheat water to create bursting geysers. With bursts of fire, she can propel herself around without the need of her wings and travel inside pillars of flame or spheres of fire for protection. And don’t even think about getting away from Shana’s flames; she can generate enough fire to set entire chunks of a city ablaze with a single attack. Hell, if she’s ever disarmed from her sword, she can just create a new one out of fire temporarily.

The flames wielded by Alastor’s chosen hunter in particular can be shaped and molded into more complex constructs. Under Margery Daw’s supervision, Shana learned to create a rudimentary arm made of flames, later evolving it into a much larger form that acts as an extension of herself in combat: True Crimson. With it, she can launch the giant fist as a long-distance weapon, catch enemy projectiles, use the arm defensively as a barrier, or enhance her physical strikes. Then there’s the next spell Shana developed: Judgement. Summoning a sick looking magical array, Shana can discern a caster among their illusory body doubles, scry on people and places from afar, and amplify sound. With Soaring Flame, she can launch fire constructs designed to pierce and slice foes in half, Gojo style.

Do note, while Shana manifests these flames through a specific, rather esoteric power source, they do act like real fire and leave burns, interacting with matter physically like you’d expect. That was a problem when Shana initially fought Yuji with the Treasure Tool, Azure, which nullifies pyrokinetic attacks, even ones directly from Alastor himself… but she eventually got so strong, she could break through such immunities anyway. That’s fucking crazy!

Seal

Seal, or Fuuzetsu, is the most basic of abilities all Flame Hazes learn right off the bat, and pretty much what every combatant in the series opens a fight with by default. Don’t make the mistake of assuming this isn’t an incredibly important power because of that, though. Seal is, essentially, a massive sphere projected by the Flame Haze that isolates a designated space-time isolated from causality, severing it from the rest of reality. People and objects caught inside a Seal are completely immobilized, incapable of acting independently without the law of causality active. Additionally, the size of a Seal varies, depending on the caster’s intentions. When Alastor manifested, he cast an incredibly vast Seal across Misaki City, and the entirety of the city itself was covered on several other occasions. Smaller Seals can still contain city blocks, so the difference mainly just comes down to available Power of Existence to supply & sustain the spell.

However, that’s entirely a one-sided interaction. Flame Hazes and Denizens can still move and act inside a Seal, and the damage they inflict to people or the environment still happens like normal. You can think of it like a time stop in terms of practical functionality, as an ordinary person will, from their perspective, go from one instant to another, suddenly ripped in half with no seeming cause, only the effect. Interestingly, while Flame Hazes and Denizens are immune to the effects of a Seal, the objects they use are not necessarily exempt. Shana used a Seal to disrupt Friagne’s sound-based weapon, preventing the tool from emitting the noise that activates its powers before it could defeat her.

As straightforward as Seal is, it does have a notable drawback in that Flame Hazes cannot sustain these spells forever, and will eventually need to retract them. Severe injury or other interference to the Flame Haze’s capacity for sustaining their spells will cause the Seal to become unstable in-turn.

Flight

Most experienced Flame Hazes possess the basic ability to fly through the air with Power of Existence, but Shana’s version of it took a while to develop fully. Motivated by her love for Yuji and desire to save him in the heat of a moment, she sprouted a pair of crimson-red wings, which allow her to… well, fly! They are kind of just for show, since other Flame Hazes can just levitate or propel themselves without such an apparatus… but they look cool.

Extrasensory Perception

Shana possesses an incredibly heightened set of senses, allowing her to detect ‘erased presences’. That is to say, she was able to sense Shiro’s approach, a foe hiding his ‘power level’ so-to-speak. His silent sneak attack failed to catch Shana off-guard, even when she was resting. This heightened sensory awareness is more potent in close-range, where seemingly no spell can fully mask one’s presence from Shana’s detection. Moreover, this ability supersedes other senses, like sight.

She can sense Unrestricted Spells being cast across Misaki City, or even just powerful people fighting from entire city blocks away. Other Flame Hazes Shana’s surpassed, like Wilhelmina, can sense phenomena across entire continents.

Do note that this extrasensory capability does have its limits, though. There are plenty of illusory or sensory-cloaking spells in Shakugan no Shana that are notably distinct from the kind of ‘presence concealment’ used by Shiro, which have fooled more powerful Denizens than Shana was capable of at the time of her feats. Shana has also been taken off-guard by Denizens whose threat levels are incredibly miniscule and insignificant… which is odd, given the earlier showing against Shiro, but sure, why not.

Regeneration

Flame Hazes can call upon the aid of their contracted Crimson Lords to heal from a variety of wounds and injuries. While minor gashes can be healed in seconds, more severe bodily damage takes considerable time and effort to mend, and leaves the Flame Haze vulnerable in the process.

Notably, Flame Hazes can also use their Power of Existence to undo damage done in a Seal, including fatal damage to humans by reversing cause from effect. In instances like these, even Shana has healed people from being cleaved in two within seconds. This is a distinctly different application of her healing power for ordinary humans & Torches, and not to be misconstrued with the self-healing flames used by Alastor and other Crimson Lords.

Empowerment

Curiously, Shana has demonstrated several times the ability to strengthen her flames and even develop new techniques mid-fight when motivated by her love for Yuji specifically. In her fight against Vual, she was also growing physically stronger the longer the fight went on.

Memory Implanting

Crimson Lords like Alastor can forcibly implant hundreds of years’ worth of memories into people in an instant. Neat!

Divine Summoning

Shana’s trump card in battle is the Divine Summoning ritual. By calling upon the Tenpajyosai, Shana can safely manifest Alastor in all his might in the human world. Shana can partially perform this rite to summon Alastor for a quick power boost, but when shit really hits the fan, she brings him fully into the fold. Doing so places an immense strain on her body, pretty much taking her entirely out of the fight; like a Mahoraga that doesn’t want to actively kill its summoner, but almost does anyway just by existing. It’s actually how Shana’s predecessor met her fate; Shana just happens to be built differently, and can survive its casting, albeit while sustaining serious injury.

This rite, Heaven Destruction Earth Break, is usually accompanied by a massive Seal being cast, with Alastor’s giant kaiju form taking action independently of Shana. And, yeah, needless to say, if you see the big A in all his divine glory like this, you’re basically just fucked with a capital F. It’s essentially like dropping a goddamn nuke on whatever poor sap is on the receiving end, with even experienced Flame Hazes and Denizens with countless kills under their belts shitting their pants at the SIGHT of Alastor’s manifestation.

Resistances

Shinoa

Shikama Doji

Named after the demon housed within it, Shikama Doji takes the form of a massive, comedically oversized scythe in battle (and a cute, accessorized wand outside of combat). While the scythe is notably a lesser rank in potency compared to the Cursed Gear used by Yuichiro and Guren, it still retains the same base properties and functions of those weapons, such as a passive, overpowering wave of energy even while sheathed. Once contracted to a wielder, a Cursed Gear’s demon cannot be used by someone else. Even the briefest physical contact with non-contracted Cursed Gear can be fatal, allowing the demon inside to “corrode the heart” by latching onto human desires like wrath and lust. The uninitiated are subjected to an illusion onset by the demon, a technique that ordinarily requires outside preparation to overcome. However, those with a sufficiently strong will and innate resistance to such abilities, demonstrated by Yuichiro, can break out of the illusion without receiving lasting damage.

Cursed Gear like Shinoa’s scythe amplifies the wielder’s physical abilities sevenfold. Furthermore, Cursed Weapons are specifically designed to prevent vampires from healing, thereby nullifying their natural healing factors via ‘curse power’. In turn, the Cursed Gear can actually boost the natural healing rate of its wielder, allowing for the healing of minor wounds in battle.

Like all Cursed Gear, Shinoa’s scythe once housed a contracted demon within, responsible for the power she could draw upon. Cursed Gear users like Shinoa can speak directly to their weapons’ demon within their personal soul/mindscapes. We should note, though, that there is a distinction between Shikama Doji, the scythe & demon, and Shikama Doji / Sika Madu, the First Progenitor of vampirekind. It’s complicated, but while the two are technically the same entity, you can think of the former as that entity brought to heel under Shinoa’s control, while the latter is its identity when acting autonomously. After her body was freed of possession by Sika Madu, Shinoa regained control of her scythe, and was able to re-manifest Shikama Doji as she originally had done.

…We should also note that, as of current chapters, Shinoa has consumed Sika Madu, the demon entity in her scythe. She has the ability to manifest several replicas of the Shikama Doji scythe or even one massive scythe, but it appears she cannot manifest any sort of demon from within the weapon anymore, as she herself is in possession of that power source internally now. The properties of Cursed Gear likely still apply to her replicas as a result.

Imperial Demon Army Uniform

On top of being sleek and eye-catching, (seriously, that green pops!) these uniforms come backed with reinforced magic resistance and a full range of spellcasting gear and other useful doodads; more on those below.

Strength-Enhancing Pills

Shinoa and the rest of the Cursed Gear users carry special advanced drugs that increase the user’s ability to draw out power from their contracted demon. A single tablet amplifies their strength by 150%, with two pushing that up to 180%; this incredible power comes with several major caveats, however. On top of only lasting 15 minutes per-pill (and taking 10 seconds to activate), the user is left completely defenseless once the drug wears off. Taking any more than two pills can rupture a person’s entire internal organ system, causing instant death. As such, these drugs are typically saved as an absolute last resort.

Fuda

The Hiragi bloodline have shown regular use of various types of wards, most frequently this explosive ward that, well, explodes after being placed on an object. However, Shinoa likely has access to other variants that come standardized with her Imperial Demon gear. These wards’ capabilities vary, from being able to freeze people in place, to blocking out all sound from an area, raising protective barriers, resisting heart-crushing aura attacks, and even manipulating emotions via a mind-based illusion.

In addition to carrying these wards, Shinoa also has the knowledge and capacity to disenchant them, stripping them of their magic abilities.

Vampire / Demon Physiology

Although it's unclear if she initially retained her vampiric physiological transformation brought on by Sika Madu, Shinoa likely achieved a similar change after consuming his power. Even basic, newfound vampires have incredibly enhanced senses of sight and hearing, able to “see the air itself move” and hear distant sounds with ease. After absorbing Sika Madu’s power, Shinoa could even spy on individuals from across cities with just her heightened sensory abilities. Additionally, demons, which are just vampires after being sealed and suppressed into Cursed Gear, passively poison the wounds they cause, amplifying their opponents’ desires to make them more susceptible to possession.

Demon Manifestation

Shinoa’s scythe is a Manifest type Cursed Gear, which granted her the ability to, well, manifest her weapon’s host demon into the real world. Whilst usually brief in appearance, Shinoa’s demon would respond to specific commands, and attacked with physical force; enough to bend metal bars or grab people from afar. However, Manifest types are ill-suited for sustained combat, unlike Possession types. In order to manifest her demon, Shinoa must sacrifice her power, fully channeling it into the demon; this means she’s left vulnerable without the innate strength boosts from her Cursed Gear, making her weak up close in battle. That being said, Shikama Doji is no ordinary demon, and has demonstrated the ability to manifest itself in scythe form of its own volition even without Shinoa’s approval or energy.

Later in the manga, Shinoa’s manifestation evolved into outright control over demons, the express purpose of her birth. While the demon in her scythe is no longer in the picture, she can forcibly manifest other demons contained within suppressed artifacts, bringing them under her command. She can even ‘route’ new demons entirely from sources unknown through whoever she wants, giving them a several-times power boost with no drawbacks.

In combat, she can manifest others’ demons in the forms of the weapons they’re bound to, using their abilities for her own; such as Gekkouin’s Falling Stars, a high-powered bow & arrow attack. She can also manifest a replica of her original scythe, empowered by the parts of Shikama Doji’s essence she absorbed. In this state, she can simply command her scythe to attack for her, without needing to directly wield it herself.

Spellcraft

The Hiragi family is noted to be a family of spellcasters, though Shinoa herself has rarely ever demonstrated any techniques how you’d expect. Still, she should be capable of basic magic-y things done by others. As a teenager, Guren reversed a city-wide spell, inflicting pain on the original spellcaster from afar.

Extrasensory Perception

Although it’s somewhat unclear if this ability is innate or owed to her scythe, Shinoa can detect “anything” within the radius of her weapon. This range is not determined by what is immediately visible to Shinoa, but seemingly the literal reach of her weapon, allowing her to detect enemy combatants directly above her inside a building.

It can be inferred from Mahiru that Shinoa’s inner demon, the one she would go on to consume, would allow her the ability to see intangible / invisible beings. Even without having done so yet, Shinoa still reacted slightly to Mahiru’s imperceptible presence. After consuming Sika Madu’s power, she should be no less capable than Byakkomaru at seeing intangible / invisible beings. Post-Sika Madu consumption, Shinoa can also detect entities scrying on her from afar.

Regeneration

As a Cursed Gear wielder, Shinoa always had access to an accelerated healing factor and heightened metabolism. However, while it could mend minor wounds in seconds, repair minor organs and damaged brain tissue with concentration or even re-attach severed limbs with enough time, the demons restricted inside Cursed Gear are incapable of mending especially fatal injuries, such as complete and total internal organ destruction.

That being said, Shinoa has developed far beyond an ordinary Cursed Gear user. With Sika Madu’s power at her disposal, she has access to the same kind of healing factor he and all of vampirekind were capable of. Yuichiro’s accelerated healing factor allowed him to heal from having a hole punched through his chest, obliterating his heart in the process. Particularly strong vampires can reattach sliced halves of their bodies in an instant, and are capable of individual movement even whilst bisected and separated from parts of the body. Lesser beings like the Horsemen regenerate their cells fast enough to counter poisons. Sika Madu himself could completely heal from having his head popped by spatial distortion in a matter of seconds, even while he was poisoned and therefore weakened. He could even adapt to that same poison that suppressed his powers previously, turning a weakness into a resistance.

Sika Madu, and therefore Shinoa, have healing so unbelievably potent, it's questionable if they’re even truly killable through conventional means alone. As part of God’s divine punishment on Sika Madu, he was made into an ‘undead’ (what would later be known as a vampire), and literally burned for more than tens of thousands of years straight with no reprieve, only to be just fine after, like nothing ever happened. We should note that Sika Madu claims he “never died”, so we can attribute his survival to his inhuman regenerative abilities, rather than an unseen ability to revive from death or something similar. In that sense, Shinoa’s regeneration is less of a standard healing factor and more akin to a residual curse of immortality. Sika Madu himself has even clarified that a vampire ‘dying’ is really just them becoming a demon, condemned to an “eternal” hell confined within a human spirit, but still active and autonomous.

Short of total bodily annihilation, killing a vampire or demon is incredibly difficult. Shinoa & Yuichiro are some of the only people to have done so, by literally consuming their respective demons’ souls from within. Short of the destruction of their soul, they can likely regenerate from just about anything else. However, more grave injuries and bodily destruction take more time to fully heal from. Ferid Bathory was able to regrow from nothing but a severed head, but this explicitly took 50 years without disturbance to achieve.

Flight

Sika Madu’s power granted him the ability to manifest massive seraphim wings from Shinoa’s body while he possessed her, suggesting she can do the same with his powers made her own.

Darkness Manipulation

In Seraph of the End, Darkness is the opposite of Light, referring to literal photons used as an energy source by God’s angels. After absorbing Sika Madu’s power, Shinoa gained control over this same Darkness. Shinoa can create barriers of darkness that completely cloak her presence, even from extremely powerful vampires & demons with heightened sensory abilities. She can weaponize that same sensory-bypassing darkness to bind and restrain her opponents with no chance of reaction, before telepathically yeeting them around like a Force-wielding Sith. Or simply use “Break” to impose concussive force on her opponent directly.

Barriers

Sika Madu has generated invisible barriers on more than one occasion, cool!

Homunculus Creation

Sika Madu originally created Homunculi that obeyed his commands, and Shinoa has done the same after consuming his power. These beings are mute, but can move with concussive force for rudimentary attacks, convert photons into Darkness, and grow as large as a small moon in the process. Shinoa used a homunculus to spy on others from afar, using its eyes as her own.

Empowerment

Shinoa has shown the ability to amplify her combat strength when motivated by her love for Yuichiro, mirroring the empowerment Cursed Gear users undergo when feeding their demons negative vices. She is aware of his empowerment and has used it to break free of bindings within her soulscape, allowing her to overpower a weakened Sika Madu.

Mind Manipulation

Sika Madu’s voice is stated to have the power to mesmerize those who hear him; this is a potent brainwashing spell that can affect even superhuman vampires, activating through telepathic communication. Shinoa has seemingly taken this one step further after absorbing Sika Madu’s powers, able to instantaneously transmit memories and experiences into others with a snap of her fingers.

Soul Manipulation

The ‘heart’ is a vague, ill-defined matter in Seraph of the End, but there is enough evidence to suggest that this term refers to the soul. Most frequently, characters refer to ‘the heart’ when speaking of consuming another’s being or entering their body. Specifically, in these same contexts, characters have referred to “capturing the soul” of others, and Possession-type Cursed Gear work by seizing control of a person’s soul, indicating that the ‘heart’ actually refers to the tangible soul.

Sika Madu and Shinoa have both demonstrated the ability to directly invade another person’s soul and suppress & confine their consciousness, akin to forced sleep; or attack them from within; damage done to the soul internally is reflected externally. Shinoa can also possess people from within their soulscapes. In addition to being able to invade souls, Shinoa has demonstrated the ability to generate and control chains inside soulscapes, powerful enough to bind and suppress Sika Madu. She can also read memories from within a soulscape.

It is in this same context that Shinoa was able to consume Sika Madu, meaning she devoured his soul and absorbed his power and spells. In doing so, she stole 2/3rds of Sika Madu’s power. (Alternate percentage statement here). Moreover, she can do this outside of one’s soulscape, as demonstrated by her victory over Ky Luc. Shinoa demonstrated the ability to “swallow” a vampire’s being, or in other words, overwhelm a vampire’s healing factor with raw energy, forcibly annihilating their physical form and sealing their soul within rudimentary Cursed Gear artifacts. In doing so, she absorbs the entire lifetime of memories of her target; a boon for strategizing, but potentially destabilizing due to the overwhelming traumatic nature of being forced to comprehend an immortal being’s tragic lifespan.

Devour

Honestly I have no clue what this power is supposed to do, this manga is so sloppily written. It might be that she’s absorbing Sika Madu’s darkness here, given the markings that appear on her afterwards, but it has yet to be explained at all. Either way, she uses this ability defensively to cancel out an attack. Cool…

Forms

Shana

Flame Haze Mode

This is barely even a real ‘form’, but it’s worth explaining the disparity in her appearances. Shana’s human form with black hair isn’t technically ‘depowered’, as her contract with Alastor is still active. But when she casts a Seal, i.e. enters any battle whatsoever, her hair turns flame-red, indicating she’s now locked in. Pretty cool, eh?

Shinoa

Demon

A form of Shinoa that has rarely been seen only when she fully gave in to her emotional vices. It should be noted that, while this state is presumably an empowered one, it has only existed within Shinoa’s soulscape interactions with Sika Madu, and has not actually occurred in reality yet.

Scaling

Shana

Flame Hazes

Shana is one of the most renowned and accomplished Flame Hazes in the entire world, having defeated or kept pace with nearly everyone on this list with only a few exceptions. Even then, Shana’s ability to grow in power and amp herself through Alastor - someone every single Flame Haze fails to compare to - no doubt cements her scaling to essentially all Flame Haze feats without question.

Crimson Denizens, Lords & Gods

Similarly to the Flame Hazes, Shana’s fought and defeated many of the most significant Denizens and Lords in the series, with the only notable exception being the Crimson God, Snake of the Festival. While she didn’t fight him at his full power, we know Alastor is his equal, and Shana… has Alastor, so again, pretty simple scaling here.

Shinoa

Although the author has stated in the past that Shinoa is far from the strongest in the squad at a base level, she clearly surpasses all but Yuichiro (at his strongest) by the time she starts wielding Shikama Doji’s power entirely for herself. She’s currently one of the most powerful characters in the verse, as a result, and should scale to basically every notable feat thus far.

Shinoa Squad

Consists of Yuichiro and his friends, formerly enlisted in the Imperial Demon Army.

Imperial Demon Army

Primarily concerns the most notable members of the Imperial Demon Army, namely Guren Ichinose, Kureto Hiragi, and their respective subordinates.

Vampires / Demons

Although the ranking of vampires’ power is dependent on a defined scale, it’s irrelevant here as Shikama Doji supersedes all of them, being their literal progenitor. The most significant vampires are generally Krul Tepes, Ferid Bathory, Crowley, and Mahiru Hiragi.

Miscellaneous

This section is a catch-all for any entities or characters whose allegiances or identities otherwise do not clearly fit any previously established categories, such as Shikama Doji’s homunculus and miscellaneous monsters.

Weaknesses

Shana

Shana is a legendary warrior, but she had to overcome a lot of shortcomings to reach that point. She’s an incredibly skilled and analytical fighter, but if things don’t go her way, she has been prone to losing her cool; even by the end of the series. All her tactics and abilities go out the window when she’s tweaking, resorting to simple brute force. Luckily, she has Alastor to try to reel her in, but this could be a dangerous misstep if her opponent has room to capitalize.

Furthermore, Shana’s been vulnerable to several specific kinds of powers that could spell trouble for her. Power nullification has worked on several instances against her and fellow Flame Hazes Margery Daw, and while she has incredible extrasensory abilities, she’s also failed to detect the undetectable before. In one instance, Shana and Wilhelmina were also affected by a spell that absorbed Power of Existence from the duo; strengthening her enemies and depowering her almost instantly.

We should stress that Flame Hazes, for all their many strengths, are not immortal or unkillable by any means. Sure, they won’t die of natural aging like ordinary humans - they’re able to live as spectral entities while maintaining their sentience after centuries, after all - but they can still be vaporized, bisected, impaled, or otherwise just beaten senseless, with the most severe of them being instant death no matter how good their regeneration may be.

And while Shana may have a higher dexterity than most, she can still be worn down and exhausted, can still bleed out and succumb to fatal wounds, can still be… well, defeated. And don’t think Alastor is a clever workaround, should Shana fall in battle. An opponent killing Shana would not actually force Alastor manifest; rather, he would retreat back to the Crimson World and create a contract with someone else, so there’s no final boss or mutually assured destruction clause Shana can fall back on to cheese a win.

Speaking of Alastor, the contract Shana has with him is also an unassumingly vulnerable aspect of her abilities. Sure, neither she nor Alastor would ever willingly dissolve their union… assuming they’re in their right mind. When Margery Daw was affected by sufficient mental trauma induced by Snake of the Festival, her mind was made so unstable it nearly led to her dissolving her contract with Marcosias right then and there, which would have left her completely depowered. Shana hasn’t had to endure a test on her mental state to this degree before, so it’s unclear how well she’d hold up under similar circumstances; yet the vulnerability remains, if her opponent can exploit it through one means or another.

Shinoa

Shinoa lacks many explicit drawbacks as a combatant, especially when in possession of Sika Madu’s powers. While it is true that certain aspects of her arsenal, such as her strength-enhancing pills, carry with them an innate risk… they sort of stop mattering once Sika Madu’s immense power comes into the equation. While most Cursed Gear users need to worry about their Demons possessing them, Shinoa’s already literally consumed hers, so there’s no such risk for her using the full extent of her abilities. Disarmament? Shinoa herself has been defeated by that before… not much of a problem post-devouring Sika Madu, at which point her powers become innate, rather than borrowed.

Her own nihilistic apathy in regards to her well-being could be perceived as a flaw, but she’s not exactly reckless in a way that would make that relevant in combat. And while she doesn’t have much experience using Sika Madu’s powers, she’s yet to actually struggle or suffer a consequence of that lack of experience. Her prodigal nature has simply resulted in the reverse, with her figuring out his powers basically within seconds whenever she tries.

Okay, well, she is pretty short, and can’t drive vehicles as a result. Look at this puny little pipsqueak and laugh.

Intermission

Feel free to check out this matchup’s fight script! Spoilers for the verdict, obviously. Maybe check that out first. Or don’t.

Verdict

For this battle to work, we’ll be applying standard verse equalization rules for both combatants within reason. Shinoa will be assumed to have Power of Existence relative to her demonstrated strength, and we’ll operate under the idea that Shana’s soulscape is similar to those found in Seraph of the End.

At first glance, it’s easy to spot right away that Shana just has a lot more direct showcases of strength, speed and durability compared to Shinoa; a consequence of the latter ultimately being a scaling merchant, who was mostly sidelined for the bulk of her series until very recently. If you were to compare their direct feats, the best Shinoa has would be creating a bunch of large explosions whilst possessed by Sika Madu; something Shana has similarly done in her clash against Sabrac. Impressive as big Michael Bay boom booms are, it’s only fair to consider Shinoa’s maximum potential with her possession of Sika Madu’s power, making her logically one of the most powerful beings in the series. So, let’s see just how that series taken broadly compares to Shana.

Yuichiro was able to pulverize a chunk out of the ground in his strengthened berserk form, but Shana could do the same long before she powered up, and with a single kick. Even before that point, she’d fought Merihim, who vaporized a much larger surface area of ground in a similar manner with his Rainbow. Both series have characters easily able to light up and bust skyscrapers and large buildings, and where Yuichiro was able to part clouds in the sky by powering up, Flame Hazes in Shana can actually move clouds with their powers to create those weather formations in the first place. So far, generally, they match up pretty well.

Considering potentially vague statements made by other characters: Urd insinuated he could “destroy” a city, but has never shown power or area of effect necessary to do so. On the other hand, when Friagne states that Alastor could blow away most of Misaki City, it’s a lot easier to substantiate with Alastor’s own blatant nuke-esque displays of power. And the numbers back this up.

Let’s compare the crater Yuichiro made early on in the series to the crater Shana made by overpowering a Denizen’s energy blast. Looking at the two side by side, based on Crowley’s scale next to the crater, that blast clocks in at around 2.25 Kilotons of TNT when assuming the volume of mass present was pulverized completely.

Shana’s, meanwhile, was created by using fire to potentially melt or even vaporize mass, as opposed to simply pulverizing it into imperceptibly small dust grains. If she did exert enough heat to do that, her crater would require a range of 8.92 Kilotons - 1.07 Megatons of TNT to pull off. At their respective best, Shana would be 475x stronger than Shinoa.

These aren’t the only crater feats both series have, either. We can look at feats done by Horsemen and Denizens, respectively, to see if the disparity holds up when viewed broadly. Looking at the dimensions of the Horseman’s crater, it would be about 21 meters across, giving a subsequent value of 66.54 Kilotons of TNT to pulverize the mass of that volume. On the flip side, a Denizen pulverized a much larger chunk of a forest in a single blow. Measuring all the sections of the irregular shape, we can see that the total volume is far greater than that of the crater the Horseman made, with a destructive yield necessitating 6.71 Megatons of TNT. And remember how Shana’s crater got bumped by using melting or vaporization of mass on a high end? If you attributed the same lenience here, as Denizens also use fire frequently, that value would skyrocket up to 193 - 806 Megatons of TNT. Turning an already immense difference in strength into a 1686x gap; far too much for Shinoa to hope to possibly contend with.  And while Shinoa can empower herself mid-fight via her love for Yuichiro, Shana can do very much the same with her own love for Yuji, so their respective boosts would more or less cancel out.

Needless to say, Shana as a verse is generally just stronger all around. That shouldn’t be too surprising, though. Margery Daw’s spells were able to straight up lift a giant chunk of Misaki City into the air, requiring a potential energy of nearly 700 Kilotons of TNT. Hecate’s basic beam literally nuked the area it impacted, mushroom cloud and all! That level of power might not be totally unmatchable in Seraph, but it’s certainly not the norm, and certainly never performed as casually as Hecate and Shana performed their feats. Most feats in Seraph revolve around making big building-sized explosions or fucking up skyscrapers, which is certainly impressive… just not “literally nuking a city” impressive.

No matter what values you use, whether it’s looking at direct feats, visual impressiveness, or similar crater feats, Shana comes out stronger every time without much trouble.

Still, Seraph of the End is perhaps most defined by its characters overcoming constant impossible odds. Shinoa has regularly fought against super-strong vampires that could kill her and her friends with a single strike, no exaggeration; and she still managed to survive every encounter. Shana’s superior strength would be imposing, but speed would determine how well Shinoa could deal with such an insurmountable gap.

Just reading and watching both series here, you’d reasonably get the impression that Shinoa is way faster. Vampires in Seraph of the End are very consistently portrayed as superhumanly fast, with much greater emphasis placed on their burst movement speed compared to anything in Shana. Outpacing motorcycles, dodging sniper shots, intercepting ballistic missiles; all done with utmost ease in Seraph, and Shinoa is way faster than any ‘ol vamp that have done those feats. No feats in Shana really compare as far as obvious visual impressiveness are concerned.

Moreover, Shinoa should be superior to Ferid, who - after consuming 400 vampires - became fast enough to view the second strongest vampire ever in slow motion, practically frozen in place. We can actually compare this to a similar feat in Shana, done by the Flame Haze, Centerhill. In his fight against the Crimson Denizens, he moved so fast, raindrops seemed to be frozen in place as he blitzed the likes of Sydonay, a major antagonist in the series.

Weirdly enough, the similar feats don’t end there. Both series have city-scale spells that activate pretty much instantly, covering a large distance and therefore achieving incredible velocity. And both series contain bullet and arrow-timing feats, all done pretty early on and casually to boot. We’ll need to dig deeper into hard numbers to get a better idea of the speed gap here, as the devil is certainly in the details.

Let’s start with another set of city-spanning feats. Shana was able to react to Margery Daw’s citywide radar spell, a simple wave of energy that propagated outward at Mach 26. Quite impressive, but not better than Mahiru Hiragi flying across Osaka. Depending on how you quantify the city limits and where you assume she started from, Mahiru’s flight speed would be anywhere from Mach 52 to Mach 536!

So, seems open and shut, right? Shana as a verse has less impressive direct showcases of speed, and Mahiru is quite a lot faster than Shana can react to. Well, that’s without getting into everyone’s favorite L&L dynamic duo: lightning and light-timing. Arguments can be made for both series here, so let’s get into it, starting with Seraph.

Shinoa would scale above Kureto’s retainer, Aoi, who reacted to snakes that moved fast enough to keep pace with Kureto’s lightning at Mach 157. More impressively, Mahiru straight up danced around Kureto’s lightning, dodging all of his close-range strikes with complete ease. Her movement compared to the distance traveled by Kureto’s lightning would require Mach 137 speeds, rather consistently.

On the other hand, Shana scales above Denizens that have reacted to and intercepted fellow Flame Haze Sophie’s lightning strikes. Looking at when Fecor intercepted her attack with Magnesia, he had to form his barrier at Mach 756 to cover a massive distance skyward to shield that portal before Sophie could reach it. Definitely faster than any end yielded by the lightning-timers in Seraph, and even faster than Mahiru’s city-covering flight.

We’d be remiss not to break for a moment and discuss the validity of both verse’s lightning-based weapons, though. After all, simply being called ‘lightning’ doesn’t necessarily mean the electricity produced as an attack is as fast as naturally occurring lightning. Why is that? Well…

Normally, air is an insulator, meaning it resists the flow of electricity. For lightning to move at all, the clouds that generate it must build up a massive electrical potential voltage. When that voltage reaches a tipping point, it causes a dielectric breakdown that literally rips air apart, transitioning into a plasma state. The reason why lightning moves so fast is because the sheer scale of energy involved is incredibly high, with millions to billions of volts charged up. This immense pressure forces the leader of the bolt to jump through the air in increments, heating the air and creating a vacuum of ionized plasma to create more segments to move through.

Think of it like clearing a path through an overgrown yard. The leader needs to do a lot of work to create the path it travels down, ionizing uncharged molecules; once that work is done, the return stroke is able to move at a fraction the speed of light due to the ionized path set out for it by the leader.

In short, naturally-occurring lightning is so fast because the clouds that generate them contribute an immense density of energy, supercharging molecules on a massive scale. The difference between natural lightning and artificial lightning is the raw power behind the charge, it’s what separates a lightning strike from a Tesla coil.

Insofar as this pertains to VS, it means that things like Kureto’s lightning sword are ambiguously qualified at best for replicating the circumstances and conditions that contribute to natural lightning’s incredible speeds. Sure, Kureto is strong, but we really have no objective scientific way to quantify the voltage of the electricity his sword generates, and the conditions in which it is used do not align with naturally occurring ones. Natural lightning has miles upon miles of atmospheric pressure and millions of volts to ionize a path down, whereas Kureto’s sword is typically used in much shorter ranges with much less time to build a charge.

Sophie’s lightning is actually noticeably more convincing, and it’s because of one key factor: weather. She does in fact alter the weather with her abilities, changing blizzards to thunderstorms, physically inducing a charge in the atmosphere to create static electricity. Her lightning might ‘source’ from her in the same way Kureto’s lightning is ‘sourced’ from a sword, but we at least can prove she is capable of mirroring naturally occurring conditions that contribute to and facilitate incredibly fast lightning bursts. Moreover, she also happens to use her lightning across large distances almost exclusively, which gives her lightning more space to establish a high-energy plasma channel.

Whew, that was a lot. All that is to say, while both Kureto and Sophie use lightning sourced from artificial means, only one of them actually replicates naturally occurring weather conditions, and therefore can proveably recreate the incredibly high energy and charge that facilitate lightning in nature being so fast. This isn’t a matter of equal lenience or two similar factors cancelling out; Sophie’s lightning is genuinely just a more valid form of it compared to Kureto’s electricity. Not that it would matter, as the Denizens who reacted to Sophie’s lightning outsped it by a much greater factor than Mahiru and Aoi’s lightning-timing. With that in mind, Shana would be-

Huh? We forgot something? Right… yeah. Okay, fine, we’ll talk about the light-timing stuff. Everyone’s got to, nowadays. In all seriousness, this is a very straightforward case to settle comparatively. In Seraph, there’s really only two things worth discussing here: the angel’s flight from Paradise to earth, and Guren reacting to red beams of light.

The angels have the same problem outlined earlier in that we really don’t know if anyone scales to them at all, in the first place. If they did, then Paradise - as the sun - would yield an impressively large distance to cover over the course of Sika Madu’s taboo. Getting a timeframe is… vague, given the lack of animated media here, but if you assume the angels detected and began flying the instant Sika Madu admits to committing a taboo on page 36, then convert the entire spoken scripted dialogue into a words-to-time website, you’d get a timeframe of just under 6 minutes. That would mean the angels flew just under 2x the speed of light.

Assuming, of course, that the events that transpired didn’t drastically add unquantifiable bursts of time in between spoken dialogue. And assuming, of course, that the angels did in fact fly there, rather than teleport or just… appear through some kind of magic otherwise.

As for Guren’s beams of light, we don’t really get a ton of context to qualify these as lightspeed. They are called beams of light, but very obviously leave a physical impact, implying far more mass than should be possible. If you were to be very generous and give these the benefit of doubt, they’d clock in just over 50% the speed of light.

Interestingly enough, we do have very blatant and literal confirmation that angels in Seraph use straight up photons, literal light. But the time period in which this occurred predated any time when they could’ve seen combat, so there are no real feats or instances to use for scaling.

On the other hand, Shana’s… surprisingly, again, got a pretty decent case to be made for higher end speed. Pretty much immediately after becoming a Flame Haze on Day 0, Shana directly dodged and reacted to Merihim’s Rainbow, an attack that weaponizes literal rays of light. Not only can we prove she wasn’t aim dodging, as she reacted after the beams were launched, but those beams are also confirmed to be heat-based, reflect and refract, and are even explicitly described as not giving off physical pressure or resistance.

That’s pretty self-explanatory, far more justifiably interpreted as genuine lightspeed compared to anything in Seraph of the End. And while the anime doesn’t help us calculate speed based on Shana’s fight with Merihim, we can refer to the flashback manga in which Shana’s predecessor also fought Merihim. In it, Mathilde moved at just under 50% the speed of light, reaching definitively relativistic speeds. Almost exactly the same as Guren’s light dodging, with none of the caveats or generosity needed.

While Shinoa might be faster just comparing the ease in which speed feats are performed and the general weight given to those moments, looking at these all holistically paints a different picture. We need to once again stress that this isn’t a matter of handwaving away equal lenience to both sides, because both sides here are absolutely not equal. Shana’s lightning is much more believably conductive to achieving natural lightning speeds, and the light beams are similarly far more substantiated and meet many more properties of light than the ones in Seraph that fail right out of the gate.

Shana is therefore stronger and faster, locking in a clear edge in Stats. But once more, it bears repeating that Shinoa has absolutely dealt with far faster and stronger foes on a regular basis. Taken at her best, Shinoa has insanely powerful tools and clutch abilities that could help her get around a stat disparity, so we need to cover their abilities to see who comes out on top.

Shinoa and Shana are deceptively versatile beyond what you would expect out of a rudimentary understanding of their capabilities, in large part owed to the complexity of their respective worlds’ power systems. Perhaps more surprising is how well the two can meet each others’ various options, pound-for-pound.

Shinoa can scry from afar with her homunculus? Shana can do the same with Judgement. Shana can boost her strength and develop new abilities when spurred by her love for Yuji? Shinoa’s done both the exact same way with her love for Yuichiro. Shinoa can sense invisible beings and detect nearby foes? Shana can do the exact same. Shana can shut off her presence to become undetectable? Cool, but Shinoa can do the same with Darkness. Heck, both can even forcibly implant memories and experiences onto the other, a particularly oddly specific overlap in abilities at that.

Regeneration is where the imbalance in abilities begins to show. Flame Hazes generally have some pretty damning anti-feats that bring into question the reliability of their regeneration, especially when compared to a regeneration monster like Sika Madu, who could heal from literal centuries of constant burning. At worst, vamps way below Shinoa’s level would take time to heal from complete bodily annihilation… but they WOULD heal, as seen with Ferid healing his entire body from just his head. That kind of damage to a Flame Haze like Shana has provably killed them, leaving nothing behind in the process.

Even simple impalement decommissioned Shana for quite some time, a wound that would be child’s play in Seraph where even Cursed Gear users can heal from brain damage and severed limbs. Oh yeah, and don’t forget, Cursed Gear like the kind Shinoa uses literally NEGATES regeneration with the wounds they inflict on vampires, who we’ve established have far greater healing than Flame Hazes. On the matter of regeneration, Shinoa easily clears Shana. The question is not if they’re equal, but if Shana could even realistically keep Shinoa down despite the gap in strength.

To that end, we need to look at the main power system Shana uses: Power of Existence.

In short, Power of Existence is a universal energy system that composes ones’ body, will, and literal existence in terms of causality. It’s no exaggeration to say that this energy quite literally determines if someone exists, or ever existed, for that matter. People whose Power of Existence have been consumed or depleted are made to have never existed in the world, remembered only by Flame Hazes who exist beyond the Human World’s laws.

And practically everything Shana does is powered by and designed to attack Power of Existence, it’s how she destroys Denizens invading the Human World, and how she liberates wandering Torches on the verge of disappearing. In other words, Shana can absolutely manipulate Shinoa’s Power of Existence, whether directly to just yoink it out of her body, or burn it away with Alastor’s flames.

Not to mention the elephant in the room, Seal. This is the most basic of basic Flame Haze techniques, and practically every fight in Shakugan no Shana opens with a Seal being cast. In VS terms, you can think of it practically like an effective time stop. With city block to full blown city-scale range, Seals disconnect the space contained from the natural laws, removing the flow of causality, time and space. Any damage done to a person inside a Seal, provided they don’t resist its effects, take place instantaneously once the Seal is removed, no matter how long it's been between the wound being struck and the Seal coming down. It’s basically like suffering an effect without cause, from the POV of the person inside the Seal.

Shinoa doesn’t really have a counter to any of this. Interestingly, though, Power of Existence does encapsulate matters of the soul; Yuji noted as much during the Second Great War that souls and bodies alike burned away in that battle. And souls is notable because Shinoa’s primary power system happens to be, what else, Soul Manipulation.

In Seraph of the End, demons exist within their contracted human souls, sealed within the Cursed Gear they use in battle. Shinoa has the unique ability however, to project her own soul into others, invading their ‘hearts’ and interacting in that space representative of their being. It’s somewhat vague, but we know ‘hearts’ refers to the soul because Cursed Gear specifically seizes control of the user’s soul, proving the two terms are interchangeable.

If Shinoa were to invade Shana’s soul, that’s not really something the latter would be prepared to counter. Once inside, Shinoa would be able to suppress, confine, and attack Shana’s soul directly, exerting possession over it, reading Shana’s memories, or even absorbing her powers entirely. Cursed Gear have even been known to induce madness through physical contact. Of note, Shana has been vulnerable to several of these abilities before.

In the Shakugan no Shana OVAs, she was explicitly vulnerable to forced mind-swapping with Yuji, indicating a lack of mental resistances to prevent Shinoa from tampering with her memories or using a brainwashing spell. And of course, in the first season, Shana was unable to defend from Bal Masque’s goons absorbing her Power of Existence to strengthen themselves. Shinoa would have no problem doing the same, if given the opportunity.

So both have ways of getting past the other’s defenses and regeneration, one way or another. Shinoa is far weaker, but when it comes to matters of the soul, she’d no doubt be able to steal a win if she managed to invade Shana’s soul. On the flip side, Shinoa might heal from just about any physical wound Shana could inflict, but Power of Existence supersedes the physical body. If Shana burned that away or simply yoinked it out with her hand, as she can do, Shinoa would have no real answer and wouldn’t be able to heal from that kind of attack.

Not to mention, Shana’s main ability in pyrokinesis uses and attacks Power of Existence. EVERY flame she uses, every construct, fireball, and slash, is made by that energy, and would carry with them the potential to burn Shinoa on a level she cannot defend from. More damning than that, Shana’s attacks cover a far greater distance and AOE than anything Shinoa can do, even with Sika Madu’s powers. Whether it's setting a chunk of an entire city ablaze or flat out nuking that city, Shinoa is ill-equipped to wage a war from a distance against an opponent with that kind of reach.

Honestly, we could keep going, there’s a deceptively hefty amount of things that could warrant mention here. Like how Shinoa can generate scythes, so she’d never be out of a weapon; but neither would Shana. Shinoa could MAYBE forcibly manifest & control Tenmoku Ikko, but equating him to the kind of souls Shinoa’s manifested within Cursed Gear is questionable, and Shana wouldn’t strictly need a sword anyway. Both can fly, both have superhuman stamina and endurance, both can shield from attacks with barriers, etc.

But at the end of the day, Shana’s Power of Existence-based abilities and Shinoa’s soul-based powers could arguably cancel out in terms of potency and dependability as win conditions. Both have several viable options that could net them a win here, so holistically, this is about as dead a heat as you could ask for. For the sake of visualizing all the powers at play here, you can refer to this handy chart.

Shana Win ConditionsShinoa Win Conditions
Absorb Shinoa’s Power of ExistencePossess Shana’s soul
Dispel Shinoa’s Power of ExistenceConsume Shana’s soul
Burn Shinoa’s Power of ExistenceSupress & confine Shana’s consciousness, rendering her soul inert
Use Seal and do whatever she wants to Shinoa, who wouldn’t be able to fight back whatsoeverAbsorb Shana’s powers via the soul
Hit really hard and really fast a lotUse brainwashing spells to disrupt Shana’s concentration, potentially induce madness and affect her contract with Alastor (theoretically)

With that said, Shinoa’s regeneration is certainly potent enough that she could believably hang in the fight long enough to get a winning play off, even with Shana’s greater stats and existence-manipulating abilities. Ultimately, it will be their combat skill, adaptability, and battle-hardened experience that determines who can more reliably get the one shot they need first.

Shinoa is no doubt an incredibly gifted prodigy, whose rapid development and ability to learn new powers on the fly is incredibly impressive. But, being frank… this is a very clear cut loss for the Hiragi heir. Sure, Shinoa has routinely dealt with far more experienced foes on a daily basis, fighting vamps hundreds to thousands of years old. Buuut, the same is true for Shana, who fights against and alongside Flame Hazes and Denizens that are just as old. She defeated Margery Daw, who’s been around since before the Great Depression. She’s defeated Wilhelmina and Merihim, who are so old, they’ve been around since medieval times. That’s actually pretty similar to the vamps Shinoa’s squared off with like Crowley, who was a medieval knight himself. And of course, Sika Madu and Alastor are much, much older than either of those combined.

The real gap here is in quantifiable skill and displays of tactics. Shinoa has struggled with the latter, understandably so, given the context of her world. But it’s undeniable that she wasn’t the shining star of the Hiragi’s training regimens, that was Mahiru. It wasn’t Shinoa whose tactical mind rose the ranks of the Imperial Demon Army; she got her ass handed to her by Guren in that field without any real effort on his part time and time again. She’s clever and tenacious, for sure, but Shana is on a whole other level.

The Flamed-haired hunter has at least a decade of straight, non-stop combat experience, trained from childhood for that express purpose, a lot like Shinoa. And like Shinoa, she’s adaptable against far stronger foes, proven by her mentorship under Merihim as a child. The key difference is that Shana’s developed a sense for ‘killing intent’, a testament to her skill that allows her to practically predict enemy movements in battle, bordering on precognitive perception. Shinoa is gifted, but when Shana can anticipate any move she does, it brings into question the viability of those moves - especially with the speed gap lingering in the background. And of course, Shana also just displays more impressive showings of CQC and skill on a more frequent basis than Shinoa as a consequence of the fact that one is the title MC of her series, while the other barely has any real fights to her name and is unfortunately coasting by on the powers she absorbed from someone else.

All in all, while both can keep up with far more experienced foes, only Shana has actually developed an incredibly useful predictive battle sense and carries a much better track record of adaptability against superior threats.

Even despite everything so far, there is still one major factor left to cover, one that could easily swing all previous scales given the scope and scale of the entities in question. Shana and Shinoa are not solitary fighters, after all. Let’s talk about the ancient beings indwelling within them: Alastor and Sika Madu.

On one hand we have the Flame of Heavens, the Crimson God Alastor, and on the other, the First Progenitor of vampirekind, Sika Madu. They easily represent the pinnacle of their worlds’ quantifiable power ceilings, at least as of the time of this writing, and therefore warrant a second look at the stats in play here.

If you paid attention to the feats lists, you might be curious about a particular moon-sized homunculus. To be super clear, there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding both how to calculate the feat itself and the circumstances surrounding it for scaling, but we’d be remiss not to cover all our bases here.

Basically, the context in Seraph is that Sika Madu orders his homunculus to convert the photons collected in the Tower of Babel into darkness. In doing so, the creature flies out into space, enlarging itself tremendously, to the point that it appears massive when compared to the curvature of the earth; with a diameter of about 2,388 kilometers across, the homunculus is only 1.45x smaller than the earth’s moon!

The trick here comes in determining what this homunculus is actually made of in order to figure out how much this giant mass weighs. Unfortunately, there’s… not much to go on. All we really know is that these beings can float through the air like balloons, but have enough density to smash through stone walls without a scratch. As an absolute minimum, and mainly just applying a figure for the sake of getting a number, let’s assume the homunculus has the density of paper: 1.2 grams per cubic centimeter. At the scale its size is shown to be, this means the gravitational binding energy - or energy that literally keeps this mass together in one piece - is equal to 587.23 Petatons of TNT, an amount of energy pretty close to moon-busting levels of power. This is the amount of energy the angels would need to overcome in order to disrupt the homunculus’ structure when they smote it down with lightning. Theoretically, anyway.

There’s a lot of uncertainties and assumptions going on in this calc, and frankly, we don’t even know if Sika Madu would scale to the angels that destroyed the homunculus in the first place. After all, he did kinda get owned by them. And you need to remember that the petaton value is NOT a result of anything the homunculus does, but rather the amount of energy the angels need to exert to destroy it. So all in all, it’s a very generous value to attribute to Sika Madu… so you know what that means. Let’s look at where Alastor gets with similar leeway, featuring the Snake of the Festival and his Path of Pilgrimage.

In destroying the Path of Pilgrimage, the Snake of the Festival created the Mistquake, a shockwave tremor that shook the Human World. Bleach is topical at the time of this writing, and you can kind of draw parallels to that series’ realms for comparison. At minimum, the Human World constitutes the planet earth, but in all likelihood means much more. The Snake did state that he would create an entire universe, that being Xanadu. And Xanadu was explicitly meant to be an exact copy of the Human World, which itself is parallel to the Crimson World. It wouldn’t make much sense for any of these to be drastically smaller than the other, so the simplest conclusion to draw here is that the Mistquake did affect the universe designated as the Human World.

Assuming the quake shook the entire universe’s 1.5e53kg mass at speeds of 0.07m/s, it would have a kinetic energy total of 3.82 gigaFOE, or enough energy to destroy an entire solar system! No doubt, far stronger than the angels in Seraph wielding moon-busting might, and frankly, not nearly as vague or uncertain logistically, either. Alastor manifesting would pretty much shut the door on any hopes Shinoa or Sika Madu might have of winning with a strength gap like that.

And this shouldn’t be too surprising, either. After all, even if they were equal in might, Alastor is pretty much the best dysfunctional adoptive father figure one could ask for. He’d sacrifice a lot to help Shana out, actively give her advice in combat, and wouldn’t try to hijack her body or sabotage her performance. Sika Madu… is really just the worst. There’s a reason why Shinoa literally ate this motherfucker’s soul. Sika Madu is responsible for every single awful thing Shinoa has endured in her life, and having to depend on his guidance - objectively useful or not - is not something she’d ever do, nor should she. By consuming his power, even if she only retains 70% of it and therefore has even worse odds of survival, at least she’d go out on her own terms, putting a close to her unfortunate fate with full autonomy for the first time in her life.

With a devil and an angel on their respective shoulders, it’s very apparent that the Crimson God Alastor is by far the stronger and more dependable support by a country mile; firmly shutting the book on this bout with the final category in Shana’s favor.

Conclusion

Advantages:

  • Much stronger
  • Much faster
  • Greater demonstrable skill, both in armed & unarmed combat
  • More varied and consistent combat experience
  • Has several ways to bypass Shinoa’s absurd healing factor (Power of Existence manipulation)
  • Alastor > Sika Madu

Disadvantages:

  • Worse healing factor & survivability
  • Much more straightforward means of combat
  • No proper defense against soul-based abilities
  • Vulnerable to mind-hax and madness inducement
  • Sword could potentially be hijacked by Shinoa

Advantages:

  • Similar adaptability against far more experienced foes
  • Generally a bit more versatile in abilities
  • Soul-based abilities (suppression, possession, consumption) are all valid wincons
  • Far greater regenerative abilities
  • Could possibly control or mess with Tenmoku Ikko directly

Disadvantages:

  • No resistance to space-time related effects, such as Seal
  • Regeneration can’t compensate for Power of Existence manipulation
  • Much weaker
  • Much slower
  • Less direct combat experience, worse showings of skill in battle
  • Sika Madu < Alastor
  • Girl’s life just sucks man, sheesh

In this battle between demon and angel, hunter and survivor, Shana secures the victory by consistently outclassing Shinoa in raw power, speed, and quantifiable combat skill. While Shinoa’s regeneration is vastly superior, and her soul-based powers offer a viable win condition, Shana’s control over Power of Existence is just as deadly, and conveniently sidesteps the young Hiragi’s insurmountable healing factor. With Alastor’s cosmic might far surpassing Sika Madu’s own, Shana would have plenty of ways to end the fight after placing a Seal - something Shinoa has no defense against or way to possibly prepare for whatsoever.

Even so, Shinoa would absolutely go down swinging. Her tenacity, adaptability and versatility match Shana’s own in equal measure, and her experience against similarly insurmountable threats is nothing to scoff at.

And hey, at least Shinoa’s taller than her.

  2. Good read, made me interested in the characters (I will not read either series because I am a bum not because of any fault of the blog), and sold the match well. Really good coverage especially considering how niche the match and series are, and I hope this pushes forward both niche and high quality production blogs in the future

  3. EXTREMELY solid first blog i enjoyed it a lot and it sold me on the MU, plus the graphics are insanely clean and look straight out of Death Battle itself. Looking forward to future releases!

  4. I'll read this whenever I have time. However, my preferred for Shana will ALWAYS be Rukia. I've loved that matchup for over ten years, and it's the one I'll always advocate for.

Still, Seraph of the End seems like a cool series.
